Chennai – To Live or not to Live…

A NOTE TO ALL MY READERS:

  1. I have not written the email that I have posted here.
  2. I am born and brought up in Chennai. I have lived my whole life in Chennai and loved every second of it.
  3. I do NOT HATE CHENNAI and neither any other city for that matter.
  4. The whole idea behind this post was to show the ignorance of the so-called educated and non-tamilians who think or have a bad opinion about Chennai.
  5. Please do understand that I wanted to show the BS and the ignorance what is very much prevailing around us and please realize that not every city is perfect but to every person his birth town is the best.

I am not sure if you have come across emails that is written by some non-chennaiite who starts by complaining how roads are bad, or how the climate is really hot and blah blah… I used to receive some emails like that or hear it from some of my friends. What I do not get is that if they knew that Chennai is “bad” for them, then why come here and work or if they do not know before and find out later, then why stay here?? … but then they have to support their families now, don’t they !! Often I do not look into these things or worry about these “complaints” because I have lived in different parts of the world and I know each place has its advantages and a few disadvantages, which if you adjust properly it might turn into a positive thing.

Today I got such an email but with a difference… “a banglorean” had started commenting (read as cribbing) on how bad Chennai is and so on. However, she did not expect a reply from another “banglorean” with a twist. I have given below the details of that email. Read it and enjoy!!! I have not tweaked or twisted this email in anyway except for hiding their original names :-) !

Comments from a software professional “banglorean”

Hi friends,

This is a live update from chennai.

Language – Tamil, tamil and tamil. Even if they know hindi, they dont speak up.

People – We never heard anyone laughing here (I wonder if they ever laugh or shout). So conservative, that noone talks even in the bus.

Food – Idly, sambhar, rice, dosa, vada, pongal. We have to cook our food ourselves (unbelievable naa).

Weather – summer from october to feb and rest of the year it’s deadly summer.

Lesiure – TV, dormitery, dirty sea beaches on weekends.

Rent – 6.5 K / 1 BHK. Advance – 6 months

Aata – Rs. 26 /kg

Apple – Rs 100 /kg

Orange – Rs. 10/piece

Banana – Rs 3 /piece

Mausmi Juice -Rs 18 /glass

Jeans Dryclean – Rs.40

Phulka – Rs. 8 (idly also Rs.8)

Interesting facts and incidents :

1. Here you cannot buy a needle after 6 PM (strange).

2. We asked an auto driver, “hindi aati hai”?. He replied in hindi “Hindi nahi aati”.
3. The most common suffix here is ‘a’, e.g. straight – straighta
2 cup tea – 2 cupa tea

4. Even dogs eat curd rice.

5. In north, names are like Gori Shankar, gauri prasad etc. Here the names are like Kaliraj, kalicharan etc.

6. When there is a ‘t’ in any name, they add ‘h’ to it. jayant – jayanth ; bharat – bharath

7. Here is a culture of adding mystical alphabets after ones’s name, like Mahesh R, Sandeep T etc.

8. Cable connection is of no use here as only tamil channels are broadcasted on cable TV, if anyone wanna watch hindi channels then you need to buy a set up box (Rs.4000).

9. Cognizant navallur office is actually not in chennai, it comes under a district called Chengalpet which is 51 kms from main city.

10. Once we saw a girl in the food court, she was looking and acting like a north indian. My friend became exited and planned to talk to her, but just then we noticed her breakfast and then “dil ke armaan aansuon mein behaye”, she was having pongal. (disguise!!)

11.How dare anyone come to chennai : Cognizant Chennai MCity comes under SEZ(special economic zone), swap and transfers from here are not possible.

12. No life after 9 PM.

13. No need to worry for Tsunami, because noone will be left to cry on your grave.

Bye Bye (waiting for banglore, pune, hyderabad update)

Life is not about cursing your posting location but it is about how soon you leave the company.

Reply from another software professional “banglorean”

See i think a few things are pretty true here…But most of it are just mere exaggeration. He has just written all his effusive frustration here..!! I live here in bangalore, and trust me its much more expensive than wht he thinks.. i have lived in Chennai and Bangalore, and in Kerala, so i do know the difference between most of the places in South India..Chennai is supposed to be the second cheapest metropolitan city after Calcutta and any other cities in India.

Language – Tamil, tamil and tamil. Even if they know hindi, they dont speak
up.

For your Kind information, nobody knows Hindi here. Only non-tamilians
living in Chennai take Hindi (like me) while most of them take French. And
excluding the non-localites, people converse in ENGLISH.

People – We never heard anyone laughing here (I wonder if they ever laugh
or shout). So conservative, that noone talks even in the bus.

They are not conservative damn it…ALL INDIANS are like that..!! The same
happens in Bangalore, Hyderabad or Pune..U dont strike a coversation with a
stranger out of the blue..!!

Food – Idly, sambhar, rice, dosa, vada, pongal. We have to cook our food
ourselves (unbelievable naa).

Excuse’ Moi ..!! When i went to the north (not specifying which place), me being a south-indian, had a tough time, hunting for some good rice to eat, because all i got was Aloo Paratha, Aloo Gobi, Gobi Manchurian, Aloo Muttor, Aloo Roast etc.. Wonder if they invented Aloo Juice.. Each of them have their own culture for taste and sense..!! So dont blame any place.

Weather – summer from october to feb and rest of the year it’s deadly
summer.

Damn it, dont tell me you would complain that it dint rain or snow in Sahara when you where there..!! Oh please, for heaven sake, each area has a difference in climate. India is not small as u get to see in the world map.

Lesiure – TV, dormitery, dirty sea beaches on weekends

Hahahaa….Atleast you get to see a beach buddy..!!

Rent – 6.5 K / 1 BHK

Do you know the size of the rooms?? They would be huge. I pay 7K for a 1BHK, that is just as big as my bathroom in Chennai..!!

Advance – 6 months

Buddy, i pay an adavnce of 11 months.. !! So who is to blame??

Aata – Rs. 26 /kg
Apple – Rs 100 /kg
Orange – Rs. 10/piece
Banana – Rs 3 /piece
Mausmi Juice -Rs 18 /glass
Jeans Dryclean – Rs.40
Phulka – Rs. 8 (idly also Rs.8)

Hahahaaa..!! Pillsbury Aata costs the same all over India dear..!! Sorry these things dont worth an argument..

1. Here you cannot buy a needle after 6 PM (strange)

God give me a break..!!

2. We asked an auto driver, “hindi aati hai”?. He replied in hindi “Hindi nahi aati”.

Buddy, thats the only thing they would have learnt in Hindi..!! For heaven sake, stop having false impressions that hindi is our National Language..!! It isnt..i have no time for this argument again..!! I never knew they speak Tamil in Delhi or Bombay..!! So why Hindi in Chennai..!! Use a more worldy used language, ENGLISH.

3. The most common suffix here is ‘a’, e.g. straight – straighta ; 2 cup tea – 2 cupa tea

Yes, like the way you’ll pronunce, thirty (therty as thartty) and fourteen (forteen as farteen)..!! Somebody stop me..!!

4. Even dogs eat curd rice.

Atleast they get to eat something, not starved to death.. and yeah, less stray dogs, that they would be famished and start feeding on children.

5. In north, names are like Gori Shankar, gauri prasad etc. Here the names are like Kaliraj, kalicharan etc.

What else do what us to name?? Elvis Presley or Brad Pitt?? Atleast Elizabeth Hurly or Angelina Jolie never asked you, why your name was Gauri Prasad..!!

6. When there is a ‘t’ in any name, they add ‘h’ to it. jayant – jayanth ; bharat – bharath

Well, in Hindi you wrtie ‘Ta’ as t, and in Tamil we write ‘Tha’ as Th..!! Dont find faults with such silly matters.

8. Here is a culture of adding mystical alphabets after ones’s name, like Mahesh R, Sandeep T etc.

Sorry, instead to keeping ‘Abhishek Anandkumar Khare’ or ‘Sunaina Swapan Teja’, we just name them as ‘Abhishek A.K’ and ‘Sunaina S.T’

9. Cable connection is of no use here as only tamil channels are broadcasted on cable TV, if anyone wanna watch hindi channels then you need to buy a set up box (Rs.4000).

Hahaha…You guys where the ones who started making a big fuss about making Hindi Channels as paid Channels…we never wanted to watch Hindi here, so who cares.. Nobody uses STB (Set Top Box), Tamilians watch all south-indian languages for free..!!

10. Cognizant navallur office is actually not in chennai, it comes under a district called Chengalpet which is 51 kms from main city.

Escuse me..!! Hahaha..!! Infosys or any other office in Bangalore, in Electronics City, is actually in Hosur Road..!! Dont expect Narayan Moorthy to build such a huge campus in the heart of the city..!! Ask questions that make sense..!!

11. Once we saw a girl in the food court, she was looking and acting like a north indian. My friend became exited and planned to talk to her, but just then we noticed her breakfast and then “dil ke armaan aansuon mein behgaye”, she was having pongal. (disguise!!)

I saw a cute south-indian guy…But what??? Ohhh..!! Shucks, he is having Aloo Paratha :’(

12.How dare anyone come to chennai : Cognizant Chennai MCity comes under SEZ(special economic zone), swap and transfers from here are not possible.

Be in Chennai learn something here, so that you could live anywhere in the world and stop making a upheaval with small matters of life.. They sent u here, so that u learn :)

13. No life after 9 PM.

Do u know what life is than just going to Disco’s and Pubs?? Partying and Boozing??

14. No need to worry for Tsunami, because none will be left to cry on your grave.

Atleast we wont sit and fight among ourselves, shoot or die cause of bomb blast..Oh Boy, i want to look sweet when i die, dont wanna look like a roasted chicken ;)

No offence meant in this mail.. But just wanted to let you noe that DON’T BELIEVE ALL ARE TRUE.

I live in Bangalore, and I do love this place, and I would love it anywhere I live..!! Learn to adjust, and not to make a big riot over static things in the world..!!

  1. You are staying in B’lore But whatever u are saying everything is for chennai.

Really B’lore is a place which people can like(not only you).

But chennai is a place wich other than pleople from TN can’t like…………..

  2. hi Joy,

i am not sure if your referring me or to the email i have posted here, because i do not live in B’lore. but one thing u need to understand the reason i posted this email was that different kind of place has different kind of living styles. That does not mean that one place is worse than the other just because one is used to that kind of lifestyle. I have lived in Chennai all my life and have traveled India and abroad. I liked the place where I lived, in fact I loved it. That doesn’t mean that I hate Chennai.

If one finds himself/herself so difficult to live in why even live there? what is the necessity? if one has to live in someplace because of financial issues, he/she needs to understand to adjust and try to see the brighter things that place has to offer.

anyways, thanks for visiting my blog and hope u will come back for more :-)

  3. You guys need to stop this language BS. I don’t expect Tamilians to learn Hindi, they don’t even like people from other southern states. All southern states have their own language and can’t understand each other. And they are not very friendly to each other either.

  4. This is to all cursing Chennai,

I have been to Blore and Chennai. The very first e-mail saying all -ves about Chennai is your poor impression.
1)What do you think ? you think evev a Japanese should talk Hindi and eat aloo paratha.. dear hkarthi, I have never heard of such an insensible person like you expecting everyone in the world to be like a bangalorean or noth Indian.
2)you never said about infrastructure in Chennai- roads, buses & railsystem where blore is nowhere comparable.
3)have you not been taught english in your school ? cant you talk to others in english. most auto drivers understand english, atleast 1 word/2 word information and respond you back to a level of your understanding.
    4) one of my friend who went to chennai to take US accent training, told me that most people (even autodrivers/tavi drivers) understand english. even the buses will have names in english, which you cannot find in your blore.
5)I accept its summer chennai, it doesnt snow in blore either.
    6) even a kid knows that the cost of living & house rent are high in blore
    7) if someone says that you are not treated well bcoz you are a north indian- it purely depends on you & how you behave. when you go to a new place you should adjust to them. dont expect them to change for your customes, interest, language and so on…
8)hkarthi- if you say only TN people like Chennai.. thats natural.. everone would likes their own state. even chennaiites living in blore don’t like to be in blore. my friends are asking for transfer to chennai. you need to understand some basic things first before you comment something..
    9) as far as job opportunities in blore, you can get only IT based job. other than that its a big zero in blore. whereas in chennai, there is a variety of field you could pick..

My sincere request to you… Please leave Chennai soon…

  5. hey guys,

thanks for your comments and i would be pleased if you could continue your patronage to my blog.

    @joy and Vijay

Try to understand that I DID NOT WRITE THE POST. I merely posted the email that I received. The reason is because not only I saw the ignorance of other people about Chennai, but also someone defending passionately about what Chennai is!… And on a lighter note, try to read who wrote what before commenting that could save you some embarrassments in the future.

However, I just wanted to make sure to everyone that I LIVE IN CHENNAI and that I DO NOT HATE CHENNAI. I am not the one who wrote those emails and I just wanted to clarify that. But this email just shows how people are ignorant to the variety of lifestyle that Chennai provides. I am proud to be a Chennaite!

Vijay, Onyango, and Joy and all others: Thanks for your comments and keep coming back for more :-)

  6. u know once up on time..i was imposed to read hindhi in my schools…
    u know even i couldnot copy from the book…even a open book i failed…
my mother tried to teach me using translation books in tamil…
my hindhi teacher used to beat me for getting zero and 7 marks out of 100…
it was very hard for me…is that i should hv born somewhere other than india..
can i blame hindhi…no its just like men r frm mars and womens r frm venus…
it may be possible for some of them to learn hindhi but not me…
    can i say i hate hindhi?even i can manage little kannada,malayalam and telegu….
    y not hindhi..
its a practical problem to go for it…do indian culture comes frm imposing?
try enjoying thing…can u say a white girl in the other as a prostitute..as she goes on with many…no its their culture…

  7. @: dirty sea beaches on weekends.

does that guy mean Juhu/Marve/Chowpaty [ bombay ] are world class one’s sparkling with cleanliness.

  8. Hi Guys,
Chennai a metro, so please lets not compare that with bangalore. It deserves to be metro its big well planned big city. But the problem here is wheather you can stay or not..? Does not matter with the idly, curd rice , I think we all have our taste.. ok but the problem here is the city does not have the variey ..ok even if its there its in 4 or 5 times costly.so its the people not the city problem. Its situated in costal area thats why hot..u cant help it.You stay in bangalore you will find everything, people are so freindly and really softspoken and well behaved .I have stayed in chennai for 4 years and in bangalore for last one year, the diffrence i felt is the people unrest. They dont want to do anything else apart from there taste and their culture but in hyderabad and bangalore its diffrent thats why nobody wants to go to chennai but if you have no opition then..Good luck.

In my view if somebody feels not to mix with others why to make the people more insecured.Whats the reason there is a always a dialogue about people of other states from the politicians and the actors here gets more applaud here?
Thats called hights of insecurity.. the only idea is we are the superiors and the feeling of consciousness which make more COLOUR issues.

Last but not the least just one horrible experience in chennai”
While i was asking for hiring a auto(Late night and very less available auto type of scenario) , the person standing nearly who also wants to hire telling in Tamil to the driver being a tamilian you should give priority to tamilian. That tells the whole story man.I did a mistake for not asking in Tamil hahahahahahahah. There is a definite problem otherwise there would not be so many opinions about the city dear.

  9. hi guys could u pls stop fighting or putting ur cities at the top..c i m from mumbai, stayed for 18 months in delhi n now staying in chennai for 4 months..i came accross with the facts which u have mentioned abt chennai(good n bad) n acclaimed it..however “is anything which u can change or have u changed anything”..if yes then come forward..the only fact which is very difficult to buy is their ignorance towards hindi language..i was told that they dont have hindi as a compulsory language in schools..i strongly belive that the government should take neccessary action to implement it asap..after all its our national language n should b given importance throughout india..

  10. Nagarajan Says:

    Hi Karan,
India has no national language, it has official languages but not just one. If you can provide any reference that says Hindi is the national language and all should give importance to that, we try to do that. Here nothing is compulsary, if you need it learn it….. It is free India….

  11. Abhishek Mishra Says:

    Hi Guys,

  12. Abhishek Mishra Says:

    Hi Guys,

I have been in Chennai for 3 months last year ..what I felt as hardcore North Indian is that This City has very good mixture of Traditional and Moderns (Living Style, architecure and so on) ,Infrastucture is very good (Roads, Bridges and so on) –The city has following things which can be flexible to other people who actually need a warm brotherhood here.

    1. Auto Drivers : They behave like rowdies — they need to tought humanity and handling people as they are handling “Customers” why they treat people as beggers — Govt should think and do crash course for them ..how to behave atleast — I have been atleast 11 countries in world but never faced any igo or rigid ness like here. and let me tell you –LANGUAGE is not a bar to treat other people.

    2. Language — Yes , Tamilian Love Tamil –No problem but why they hate Hindi –they dont think they are Indians or are they independent state ?
They need to love any other language -its not necessary you have to speak a language –you have to respect the same -as this is of your country only ..If they think like that they are Independent –they should be treated like criminals as India in ONE.

    3. Night Life :- Yes ..Its boring after 9 pm .. it doesnt mean I am talking about Disco’s ,Pubs or something else. That mean this is not a Vibrant City — Only Beaches ,City Mall or very selected Hotels (Residency in T Nagar) have ambience to adjust.

    4. Food :- Being a Cosmopolitan/Metro City -It MUST provide all kind of Foods .. People are coming to work –IT people ,Students ,Newly weds , Foreigners and other people who earn money here.. they need to eat in their tone –as a responsible city -it should provide all -Bangalore is costly -yet people love to go there -as its is Flexible to attract them -

Chennai -open your doors .. we all are one -only thing we never meet like now – we are part of great india and we need to prove that we can grow in very Flexible maaner – no matter what we speak.

I found most beautiful buildings here –the tea (I love it here so good ) ,the Girls(very dedicated and responsible ) and a lots of think which gave me all good impression to love chennai -but chennai you have to change .. its the need of the year.

    Love ya Chennai–

    from

  14. If you say you are a Bangalorean, then why are you using ‘we’ for chennaites….I lie in Bangalore, and guess what…all that’s mentioned above is ‘true to the last letter’ according to all my Tamil friends living here…They second the opinion expressed above. Chennai ‘is’ definitely quite backward. And this reflects in peoples mindset and attitude..

No offence meant, but develoment and westernization have hit south india quite late as compared to the north and west. And Chennai sure is the last to catch up.

And yes, not to forget…let me enlighten you here dude…Hindi most definitely ‘is’ the national language for God’s sake. DOnt say its not. Read rapidex general Knowledge for primary schools:-)

  15. Hey guys…

I’ve been around…and have not seen such unfriendly and unpolished people like south indians. you guys are such fuckin tribals…from your table manners to driving manners…you ABSOLUTELY suck!!!

Vishal is right in saying that development and westernisation came a bit too late to south india. And you are doing either nothing or too much to catch up. For christ sake how can you have food without cutlery…be it a restaurant or a social gathering…with the curry dripping all the way down to the forearm. Hey guys wake up…verappan’s dead…

Driving manners!!! O! My! God! Its like the moment you leave home you place your right hand on the horn and left on the gear ever. I mean how can you honk when the signal is RED. How can you honk in a traffic jam. :-) Goodness…wake up guys…you behave like absolute junglees…And thats also because you have started to drive cars in the very recent past. So looks like you are overwhelmed…seriously…

The moment you realise that one is a north indian…you are out there to show your colors. But let me tell you…each time you behave stupid with a non south indian, you prove that north is the best. Coz we never ever behave stupid or trouble you guys when you come to the north.

wake up guys…or soo we will take over!!! :-) :-)

  16. ne0sphere Says:

@Tarun, You are a fuckin retard! North taking over south on what? IT or automobiles or hardware or technology or education or what? One thing north can undoubtedly take over south is the number of rapes a year and paedophile cases among other crimes!
Wake up and smell the fuckin coffee, douchebag!
Though, am not from Chennai, from a few weeks of my stay there, I would say they have quite a decent traffic management. Leaps and bounds better than here in hyderabad where the traffic cops are simply ignored.
All this hatred because North Indians speak piss poor English which hinders their communication in a tamil and english dominated city like Chennai. I would say, ask your fellow northies to learn to get comfortable conversing in English and their problem is solved right away.

  17. Reo_fernandis Says:

    Hollaa alll Indians……

  18. Well.i have lived in Bangalore, chennai and delhi. Chennai was the worst. The moment you step in hot chennai you feel like nuking this place.
Auto drivers should be killed nude. They are born bastards..
And the low class here are really worst than tribals of south Africa..
And you IDIOT ne0sphere ..you said that rape cases here are less.Of course.who the fuck will even touch those ugly looking gals…..
ANd yea…you tamilians think you are great..Actually you are inferior.ANd you try to hide by showing yourself superior.haven’t you seen several bollywood movies making fun of your looks, accent and country behavior.
Basially you chennaites feel inferior to rest India. And that’s one reason you hate all..even bangalore, andhra and northindia.
The moment a northindian stands in front of you,you start looking like a rugged south african Beggar.
THis is not my opinion but of all.
NOW LET ME TELL YOU.WHY North Indians only complain of chennai. They dont complain of bangalore or mumbai.Simply because chennai sucks. No matter how much you try to mask, you suck…thats your destiny.

  19. I agree with you aks..Your comments are little stronger but you are write.
I hate chennai to the core. These bastard tamilians suck..
And yea..do nuke chennai if you can..

  20. Yes, tamilians have really bad attitude towards hindi. Why they forget that it is our national language.why not punjabis, gujarati etc complain about hindi.why only these tamilians. And yea, i agree,i feel like burning these autowalas .i pray they all die a horrible death.

  21. Chennai was a nice laid back city in the 80’s .It has now become overpopulated ,very congested and very dirty. I do not think that North indians are superior to South Indians or vice versa. I agree that North Indians are more fun loving though a bit violent .

About Auto drivers ,yes they are the most rotten bastards in this universe. They look like shit and behave like shit. There is no life what to talk about nightlife etc…

  23. I am sorry to say that what I have tried to do with this post has turned into a nasty brawl of North vs. South. This was not my intention. The whole idea was to make people realize that not all cities are great and we should not just “stereo-type” the cities.

I am sure if you ask some one from Mumbai/Delhi/Kolkata, he/she would probably give similar views if they are also from some other state.

Since I failed to achieve what I tried to do with this post, I am hereby closing the comments section.

While it is rude to comment about one’s city while living in it, I guess it their respective right to post their opinions. But just lashing out with no common-sense/logic is something I will not stand for.
